Applications open for second round of leadership program

The Sheepmeat Council of Australia (SCA) has launched the second round of a professional development opportunity for sheepmeat producers and others in the industry to build leadership skills and develop networks.

The Sheepmeat Industry Leadership Program is part of the SCA and Meat & Livestock Australia joint initiative, ‘Building Leadership Capability for the Sheep Industry’.

SCA Industry Leadership and Communication Manager Kathleen Allan says the council is seeking applications from producers, policy officers and other people in the sheepmeat value chain.

“Through the program we’re hoping to build a pool of people with the skills and confidence to return to their businesses and communities and take on leadership roles within the sheepmeat industry,” she says.

The SCA leadership program is run by the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation, a not-for-profit company that works to develop leaders with a focus on influencing change across organisations, industries and communities in rural, regional and remote Australia.

Each of the 15 positions in the program is valued at more than $10,000 and covers all the training, course materials and travel to the two face-to-face sessions. Participants will be required to contribute $500 to the cost of their participation in the program.

Participant in the 2016 program Elise Bowen, Wagga Wagga, NSW, says the program helped her realise her own potential.

“I hadn’t had any leadership training previously, and thought leadership was something I didn’t have the skills to do,” she says.

“The great presenters and tools in the program helped me start the leadership journey, reflect on who I am and the skills I have to offer in a leadership role.

“I absolutely would recommend the program. It is a brilliant opportunity for people excited about the future of the Australian sheepmeat industry, to gain some confidence and belief in what they have to offer, as well as opportunities to network and meet some fantastic people.”

Applications close at 5pm on Monday 23 October 2017. An application form and information sheet with entry requirements are available online via the SCA’s website.
