Established in 1947 by Sid Smith, grandfather to current dealer principle, Gavin Smith, Hunter Outdoor Equipment takes pride in being able to say their service has stood the test of time.
Now third generation dealer principle, Gavin has been involved in the business for 33 years. “When I was 10 years old I used to go in on a Saturday morning when soccer was cancelled. I started with points and plugs and progressed from there.”
The dealership currently has 6 employees and two distinct separate departments. “Sales and spares are in one department and the workshop is located across the road. The advantage of this is it eliminates the noise, especially with chainsaws.”

“We only supply genuine Honda spares and accessories for Honda products,” Gavin said. “I don’t quite understand why some dealers supply aftermarket spares for genuine products. This will only detract credibility from your store and the brand.”

When asked why Hunter Outdoor Equipment decided to stock Honda Power Equipment products Gavin said, “We needed a premium brand and Honda was the obvious choice. In addition to that we also needed a generator supplier. Honda’s reputation for 4-stroke reliability was a major influence.”
“It is very rare to not have a positive experience with Honda products. Customers satisfaction is always very high. Ease of starting, not having to fix fuel, and product longevity all seem to be key factors that are paramount for the end consumer.”
“Through economic highs and lows we have always found that customers are willing to pay more if they are getting a better product that will last and give them good service life.”
Hunter Outdoor Equipment have won many awards over the years from the brands they support for excellence in sales. In recent years, they have won Honda’s award for the largest sales growth and the best Honda retail dealership in NSW.

To give back to the community that has supported them for 70 years, they sponsor a number of charity organisations and local events by donating product that can be auctioned off to go towards the cause.
The team also participate every year in the Hunter Valley Caravan and Camping Show with a primary focus on generators. “It has consistently been successful for us,” Gavin said.
With over 70 years in business, Hunter Outdoor Equipment must be doing something right. When asked what the dealership is famous for, Gavin credited the high standards instilled into the business by his grandfather.
“I guess the two things we are most famous for is outstanding product knowledge and customer service. This started with my grandfather who had big boots to fill in this area but we do our utmost to maintain this high standard.”
“People don’t forget a good experience, even to this day, every week I would have an old timer come and recall an experience from my grandfather. Good experiences are essential for repeat business.”
